Prioritising

One of the things that really irritates me in the fitness industry is when a ripped fitness coach who is in their twenties or thirties, who has no children, no ‘other half’, no mortgage, no savings plan, no ‘real life stressors’, etcetera,  says something along the lines of:

“Anyone can find 15 minutes in their day to workout.”

Blanket statement, no shades of grey. If you can’t find 15 mins to workout you are either crap or lazy.

“If it is important to you, you will find a way.”

Again, if you fail then it clearly wasn’t that important to you, or you didn’t care enough.

Now whilst I agree it the motivations sentiments behind these statements, they leave no scope for the things that can happen in real life. What project management geeks might refer to as ‘mission creep’, or the timeline sliding to the right (that’s one for real PM geeks!).

So why am I prattling on about priorities and such?

Because you’ may have probably noticed my absence from most things ‘social media’ lately. We had a few projects that I had to (I’m afraid to say it) prioritise over our usual running commentaries via the mediums of mailing lists, Facebook, Youtube, etc.

So what are these secret projects you’ve been working on?

Training is a continuum, and we just have to figure out where on that line you are.

Our class for ‘mums returning to fitness’. Mindful Mums will be live by June and is a block of classes aimed at restoring core strength and function to recently new mums. Focusing on breath, movement, balance and play, Mindful Mums is about recreating the foundation patterns from which strength and endurance can be built (and you can also play with your baby whilst doing it!).

Our class for primary school aged kids. Using child friendly ‘soft weights’ in a mixture of animal and ‘Viking’ based movement games and obstacle courses. Children get to experience the exhilaration of learning how to safely lift, throw, carry and push in a game-based environment.

So it that all I’ve been doing this last ‘silent’ few weeks? No.

Being a father of two children and having the Easter holidays… I’m thankful that I’ve put in the time to learn the kettlebell lifts. Having a couple of ‘bells in the your house is one of the best ways I know to be able to ‘cram in’ some quick workouts that keep your strength and stamina up. When the kids are happily doing their Easter holiday homework, blasting out a quick kettlebell snatch or clean and press practice is a great way to keep on top of your fitness when the world conspires against you!

Whether you are young, old, male, female, pregnant, a full time mum… whatever, there is normally something you could be doing to improve your fitness. It may be re-prioritising your life, watching a little less TV so that you can get more or better quality sleep. It could be planning and shopping one day of the week to free up time later in the week to ‘sneak in’ a few workouts.

Whatever it is, it starts with a single step no matter how big or small.
